Today I went to museum de Pont in Tilburg. The reason for my visit was the exhibition about Sohpie Calle.

Museum: Gemeentemuseum Helmond

Today I went to the Gemeentemuseum in Helmond with my mum. The museum there has got two different locations, one is the old castle and the other is a more modern building.

Museum Trip: Stedelijk Museum (SM's) Den Bosch

Today I went to the Stedelijk Museum (aka SM's) in Den Bosch, with my mum. It was a nice little museum, even though it was cold inside and there was some noise coming from the tubes (heating perhaps?). Anyway, the musuem concentrates mostly on ceramics and jewellery. I went for the exhibition about jewellery by artists, without actually knowing anything about the museum, but in the end I preferred some of the other current temporary exhibitons much over the jewellery one.

Unfortunately we weren't allowed to take pictures, so I can't show you much, but I did get my hands on some flyers and stuff, so I'll try to find some pictures on the internet. So, hereby I admit these (in this peticular blogentry) are not my own photographs, they are all copyright to their respective owners.

I'll tell something very short about every temporary exhitbition.

*Uitgelicht - Peter Voulkos
Lots of ceramics, Voulkos is well known for breaking the so-called habit. He creates ceramic sculptures that exist of piled up elements. The way of how it was made is clearly visible in the endresult, and the sculptures aren't just the result of creation, but also of deformation.

Unfortunately I couldn't find pictures of the artworks I had seen at the museum (or just couldn't be sure they were the same artworks). There was a documentary about the artist, and I sat down to watch it for a while. Unfortunately the sound quality was zero and there were no subtitles, so I couldn't make much of it.

*Wynolt Visser - Kamerinstallatie (chamber installation)
The first of four younr artists who will build a presentation in the SM's. The title of the group exhibition is 'The Nomadic Condition'.
Visser works a lot with textile, prints and 3D. It's a nice combination. I like the use of the face and how material meets shape.

*ONE - Andrei Roiter
Roiter takes a lot of pictures and uses these as point of departure for his paintings. Most of his photographs are of architecture, but these buildings undergo a metamorphoses in his paintings. Elements of the buildings are put in new context against a new background.

*Catherine Yass - The China Series
Yass is always looking for a specific place, where actual situations and a dream of the future are combined.





*Private Passion - de unieke collectie kunstenaarssieraden van het SM's (the unique collection of artist's jewellery of the SM's)

For this exhibition we went into another room. It was dark, and we were given little electrical torches. We had to light our own way through the exhibition. If we had been the only ones in the room this would have been nice, but since there were other people as well, I got blinded several times because people were uncareful with the lights.

I saw some very nice jewellery, some even by Alexander Calder, whose work I adore. I was really happy about this. Unfortunately I could only find one picture of what I have seen.

It was also funny to recognise names like Man Ray and Picasso, I don't think I realised he made some jewellery as well.



In the end, it was nice to have been at the Stedelijk Museum Den Bosch, but I don't know if, had I known what it would be like, I would have visited anyway. I can tell you this, the website is absolutely useless. There barely is any information on it, and the English version of the website is even worse. It doesn't work very well, either. I would have liked to see more information on exhibitions than just a few sentences, and some information about the artists. Some pictures of the artworks displayed would have been nice too, especially since most artists featured in the exhibitions aren't that well known at all.

Edit: and damn the tag limit! I can't even squeeze in every artist :(

Museum Trip: GemeenteMuseum Den Haag

At Tuesday I went to the Gemeentemuseum in Den Haag (NL) with my boyfriend. Because he's not that much into art we had planned on visiting the temporary exhibition first, then check on the time, then possibly visit the permanent collection of the museum and then go into the city Den Haag and shop for a while, making it a nice day out.
Unfortunately the day started with our train being delayed which meant we were at the museum much later. Also, it was a bit crowded which slowed us down a lot, too. In the end we decided not to check out the permanent collection. Too bad. But, better next time!

Het Gemeentemuseum, Den Haag:
I had been wanting to visit the temporary exhibition about Cézanne, Picasso and Mondriaan for a while now, but hadn't had the time or means to actually go. With the end of the exhibition getting closer (the 24th of January) my boyfriend and I decided to go. I was really happy about this.

I made a lot of pictures of the paintings and other artworks displayed, and also bought the catalogue and a bunch of postcards (for my collection).

Museum Trip: De Pont & Audax Textielmuseum - Part II

Het Audax Textielmuseum, textilemuseum:
I wanted to go to the Audax Textielmuseum because we were in de neighbourhood anyway (it being only a short walk from De Pont) and there was this little exhibition about Minä Perhonen, a Japanese Fashionlabel.
We weren't allowed to take pictures, so unfortunately I can't really show you much about this exhibtion. I did lend a few pictures from the world wide web, though.
I regret not having bought the catalogue... But then again, since I recently quit my studies because of medical reasons (Yes, it’s true, I did.), I'm not really in the position of buying lots of stuff.

Anyway, to continue with my 'review' of this lovely day-trip...

Even though it was small, I really loved it. Minä Perhonen is a fashionlabel by designer Akira Minagawa, that stands for clothes that are timeless, delicate, playfull and full of little details. Old and new techniques of making fabric, prints and clothes in general are combined in a wayward manner. Also, they are of the opinion clothes should be able to last more than just one season (as usually is the case in regular fashion), and their designs are of such quality (and detail) that they last.

A little fact about Minä Perhonen: The name is Finnish for I, Butterfly and refers to Akira Minagawa's passion for Scandinavian culture and the symbol of the butterfly in the wild.

The exhibition itself consisted of a room with various dresses on plastic models. On the walls lots of squares hung, showing a great lot of fabric samples. in another room there was a low display window (think of a long, low table) displaying drawings and samples of (and for) fabric/print designs. In another room there was a table with some books, flyers, postcards on it (not to be touched) and two videos were being projected on the walls. One showing the label's studio and the other showing a fashion show featuring Minä Perhonen's designs.

In the show one particular outfit caught my eye. I adored it so much. It consisted of a white shirt, a black top over it (it was cut very high, so it only covered the breasts, or stopped above that... the memory is already fading! :(), with black sleeves that started puffy and then continued tightly until the wrists. The model was also wearing a lovely bright yellow skirt. I just can't seem to find a picture of it :(

Some other things I saw at the exhibition:
This coat was on display, I thought it absolutely gorgeous. I was sold the minute I took my eyes from a fabric sample (the white version of the lower parts of this black coat), and looked at this.


Notice the print on the fabric used in this dress, it are sketched horses and little blue dots! A part of the exhibiton was dedicated to fabric/print design, and that's where I saw the print the first time. Only when I saw the dress I realised they actually use the lovely quality of sketches in their actual dresses!


Pretty deep blue coat with lovely white circles. It's maybe not a big deal, but I love the button holes being carefully placed right in the middle of the circles.


During the fashion show projected on the wall of one of the rooms, as mentioned earlier, I also saw this dress, the sleeves are very elegant, the print very playful. Note the edge of the skirt? It's interesting to see that not everything is neatly sown etc, which might also be considered boring, but kept 'rough', 'unfinished', to add to that playful look and make the dress a little less formal, more cheerful.


Also, I saw this lovely fabric design, featuring white seagulls in a bright blue sky. Isn't it just wonderful? I absolutely adore Minä Perhonen for (literally) using lovely sketches like these for prints....


I saw the paper design for the print used in this dress. It's like a mozaik of tiny pieces of paper.


While searching the internet for pictures of Minä Perhonen's designs, I came across this bag. Isn't it just fabulous? Every girl should have a handbag in the shape of a bird.

Museum Trips

When starting this blog I decided not only to show you some of my work, but also to tell about the museums I visited, or post about things that inspire me, that interest me.
Now, I've only yet done the former, and not yet the latter. This will change.
Not only will I post about the museums I visit from now on, but I'm also planning to post a short blog entry about the museums I've visited in the past (the last two years I think). Just so you know.
