Today I watched a documentary about the artist Rothko. My 3D teacher mentioned him in class, when talking about the work I had made for that day. I already was familiar with his work, and I still love it very much.

Well would you look at that! I've chosen a new lay-out, do you like it? It's unfortunately not my own picture used for the background but I hope to make/find one of my own that suits my blog :) Also, I realise the header doesn't fit anymore so I'm going to try and remember having to change that. Edit: I had blogger resize the header on it's own accord and now it's much too small, but at least you can read it!

Over at http://ingevandenbroek.blogspot.com/ I'm active again, blogging in dutch about what I do on/for school.I wish I had more time for other things, since I really would like to fill my portfolio/my website better and I need to post a lot of sketches, and my webshop could REALLY use some promoting. And more items of course. I wish I would just sell something.. I don't know what's wrong with it, except that no-one knows about it and that it's on DaWanda, and although there are a lot of people on the website, I think much less people know about it compared to other websites. I dunno. I need to promote my stuff, but that's something that's reall really hard for me to do... We'll see.

Yesterday I came across this illustrator, Deborah Van Der Schaaf. The website is in Dutch, but you can see enough to understand why I like this artist so much! She's got some really clever pieces of illustration art. These are the kind of people that make me doubt if I should go study art or illustration. And it's a very serious doubt. Why can't I ever make up my mind and go for one thing?

What do I like so much about these illustrations?
Hard/bright colours, big contrasts, simple but with a clever idea behind it, cheerful, a bit strange.

Movie: Eclipse

Today I went to the cinema with two friends of mine. First we watched Twilight and New Moon, as a sort of marathon. It was a very nice day.

I'm not a big fangirl of the Twilight Saga, believe me, but I DO like the books, and the movies aren't THAT bad. I'm sick and tired, honestly, of having to hide liking the books (and the movies, though I do believe the books are way better) because I'll either get hateful looks thrown at me, and have to listen to people ranting about how stupid the story(book/movie) is or having people drool on my pants when they think of Edward, or Jacob. I'm kinda neutral on that subject, by the way. Well, maybe not. I'm quite biased I suppose, since I love vampires (books/movies). But still, I see flaws in both characters, but I really do not like Jacob at all. Which is probably just because he forces Bella into kissing him, when she doesn't want to.
Anyway, I'm starting a little rant here myself so I'll just quit that :P
About the movie, I actually quite liked it. Too bad they changed actors for Victoria, because I really liked the first actress, and the new one, well, she didn't look the part in my honest opinion (she's way too cute! Especially her nose just yells "cute and cheeky", not blood thirsty vampire). All in all, Edward and Bella did much better than the last two movies (I don't like the actors to be honest... Bella seems to use too much botox and usually only looks neutral or frightened).
Still. I shouldn't complain so much! I liked it. And I'm probably going to read the fourth book, Breaking Dawn, again so I'll know exactly what should be happening next movie. Something I should have done with Eclipse.
Which reminds me, I should go and read Harry Potter 6 & 7 again.

Header 07

Today I've been fiddling with some photographs from the 26th of June. I made another header, as you might have noticed.

This is the first version. I know it's a bit big, it should be broader and less high. But still, I like it.

Second version, already getting a bit better but still not broad enough.

Third and for now, the final version :) (might still be better if it was more broad?)

I also made a big banner, don't know if/how I'll use it, though. At the moment it's my wallpaper :P

I've been working on the webshop again today. I added a header, like it? It's just a quickie, but it'll do for now :) I wish I could work with illustrator, but I've got no idea how to properly use the program. And at the moment I just don't have the time or patience for tutorials. We'll see.

There's just some problems with the page you are directed to when you're first going to the website, and also the About Me page gives some problems, but just click again if you get an error, because it will work the second time.

Update & Header 06

I've been wanting to post more blog entries, but unfortunately things got in the way. At the moment I'm eager to post, but since my website is down for a little while (changing hosting sites, something went wrong, it's now redirecting wrongly) I can't put watermarks on my pictures for the blog, either. (my boyfriend built something for that, but it comes with the website). So, for now... A little more time of nothing. I'll see if I can think of things I don't need to watermark when posting here.

Oh, and I've been experimenting with a photograph for another banner, like it? I think I should try to make banner differently, though, since now I only use one picture that I edit a little, instead of putting more things in it (and I've only used my photography things and no other art forms so far). I'll be thinkin on it.

I tried to make the text more easy to read by adding a white background. Does it really work? Should I make it less transparent? Or do you think it's not that bad without one?

I'm not sure at all about the extra text, though. I could name more art forms, but it seems silly. Especially since my online portfolio is so very empty! 2D sounds... just not right, but I do a lot more than just paint and pencil work. The jewellery and photography seemed obvious so I put those two on their own.

I'll probably change this header again, soon.

Book: The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold

Yesterday one of the books I ordered arrived. It's 'The Lovely Bones' by Alice Sebold. I'm currently at page 79, and so far it's a great book. I saw the movie first, and it's not bothering me at all. It's actually playing a long in my mind, well, not exactly since the book is a bit different, but still. It's a great combination. Gotta love the cover, too, by the way.

Museum Trip: Hermitage

Today I went to the Hermitage in Amsterdam, for the exhibition "From Matisse to Malevich". It was a very interesting exhibition, and though I spend a few hours inside, I still felt like having raced through it all when I went outside again (funny little fact: when my parents and I left the museum, I almost bumped into the Dutch Crown princess Máxima :P We passed each other very closely anyway).

Unfortunately we weren't allowed to take pictures, so I noted down some of the painters and paintings. We bought the catalogue, too, so it won't be hard to find the images I loved most, again. I'll see if I can find them on the internet or take a picture of them (too much effort to scan the book, sorry :3)

Anyway, at the moment I'm too tired to type much more than I already have, so I'll update this blogentry tomorrow!

I only just found out about this artist, Julie Nord. She's got some very interesting work! (Pretty!!) I really like her style of delicate illustrations, of black and white, of a deeper meaning and story. There's so much detail you can totally lose yourself in any of her works. Pictures crowded with detail, and then a big white, open space. It's very strong.

My bank won't allow me to have a creditcard, since I'm not officially a student at the moment. I will have to wait until I start studying again. Sigh, this really disappointed me. It means I will either have to wait for half a year or just not start a webshop on Etsy. Which was the place I wanted to start a webshop the most! (since I know nothing about Dawanda at all, and have only heard from 1 person selling there, ever). Blah.

I think this will mean I'll start a webshop soon, though. I suppose Dawanda'll just have to do. Having only one webshop to try, I guess things will go faster and I won't need every item twice. Which is much more handy. But it sucks that I can't compare shops, though. Oh well..

I admit it, I'm such a goth. Well, sometimes. People like to think I am always, but often I just can't follow the way those people think. How on earth are some of the clothes I sometimes wear gothic? I love colour very much, but usually (read: something more of the past, and I'm working on it) I just feel more confident wearing dark clothes. Bright colours make me feel very big.

Some thoughts on style and popularity and networking

It stays hard, to experiment, to evolve, to become better but at the same time yourself. I've always liked drawing, and I guess I've always been "good" at it. Even though I've regularly had my doubts, people always kept telling me I was good, had talent.
Since at least a year, and probably since longer than that, my style has changed. This is only logical since I'm young and in search of myself and my own style, the things I like and find important. However, I still have doubts, doubts, doubts. About everything and anything. Since that year (or longer) I have been more focussed on abstract(ed) art, a sort of naivety has entered my sketches and drawings and paintings etc. Not a true naivety of course, I'm not a naive person. But my style is less realistic and more to the point, the images play more the role of portraying something deeper than of showing how something really looks.
I don't think it's a bad thing, but sometimes I see other people's work that is very realistic and I feel like people don't think I'm good enough because I don't do much of that work any more. I have to admit though, I haven't drawn or painted very much except for school or just sketches so, well... The realistic art is much more popular than other things, and so I sometimes feel unappreciated.
Sometimes this makes me want to be very good at realistic drawings and paintings, and though I know I'm not thát bad at realistic drawing, I know that I've lost some skills because I haven't drawn very much in a long time.
I mean, I'd love to get lots of attention, who doesn't! But I don't really mean it like thát. It makes me wonder, do I want to be the same as all those other people who draw realistic things? Or do I want to part from that and just do my own thing? But why couldn't I just do both? How can I turn it into the way I want to go myself? I mean, being popular is good, but that's a lot about connecting too, and social networks. Something I kinda.. stopped doing. It takes too much energy. Yet, if I want people to watch my stuff, to like it, to say something about it, maybe even want to buy it, and of course, if I want people to get to know me a little and look into my webshop (whenever that opens) and buy things, I'll have to get some more attention. And it doesn't come easy. And I know this very well, but I don't know if this is the right moment for me to get lost inside the internet again, and comment and tell things and be so very active. I just don't know how I can combine that with how I feel and everything. But I know I'll have to do some networking in the end, I do. We'll see.

Hmm, maybe I'm just rambling too much now?

Then I wonder again, ís this bad? Shóuld I draw more? If I really wanted to, which I think is the case, then I would, right? So this confuses me a lot.
I really want to do both. But I don't really know how to. At the moment I just really want to start drawing and painting again/more. We'll see what comes from that.

I have the feeling this blog entry is a bit... vague and well, me wanting to be popular. That's not really how I mean it, though. I just thought I'd say something like this on my blog XP

I actually feel guilty about this. But I understand that I should not. I should only do these things if I really feel like doing them. And at the moment, I don't. So that's it.

Cleaning the pond

I've been studying for my art history exam of Wednesday. A bit nervous (of course).

Then I read this quote, and again it struck me as being so very true.

"Art is the guarantee of sanity"
- Louise Bourgeois.

This 'fact' is woven through my own life, it is how I 'survived', even though it doesn't seem at the moment that I create much, if anything (except for some jewellery). I really miss being creative and really actually creating things, though. I really, really do. But there's just not much energy/time/space for me to do that. I've been wanting to do something with ceramics, but although I've got VERY much good clay (got it from my last study at the Fontys) I don't have an oven. So that's the end of it. For now, at least. (maybe when I start again at the art academy, or maybe a ceramics course? We'll see about that). For now I should write down (and sketch) my ideas more often, since I usually think of something and then forget about it, which is a shame, really.

And maybe, maybe (actually probably, if not pure truth) I should just DO something. Don't matter what, just start making something and see where it goes. Something not just a drawing or a pencil sketch or a little painting. Just something bigger. I've still got an idea with an umbrella... Hmmm... But for now, I'll stick to trying to study. Distractions, distractions....

Since my "celtic" looking outfit isn't very special (it's just casual grey and brown clothes thrown together) I went for a 'classic gothic' look (black would be a good choice as well because the weatherbroadcast said it would be a cold day :P).

Queen's Day was a succes. I could have sold more, perhaps, but I already earned much more money than I expected. Then again, it was a flea market and people don't expect to buy jewellery for a bit more (I did lower my prices very much for this special 'first selling' occasion). However, I do expect a different buying pattern on my webshop (and people with (more) different tastes) so I'm not going to let this lead my thoughts on, about what kind of jewellery to make. I just want to make things I like myself, you know. ;) (No worries about that though!)

Anyway, here's a picture!

This is somewhere at the end of the day so the stand is a bit messy.

I know, I know, I was trying to sell way too much things at the same time, people barely looked through the baskets with jewellery. Oh well, better next time ;)

I learnt a lot this day!
- make the stand less crowded
- more difference in height
- more things on display
- hang up jewellery (like I did on the photograph, I only did this after a few hours)
- take with me a nice rug or something to put underneath the stand so I can crawl to the other side (since I could barely walk around the stands next to me)
- make better price cards
- get little paper bags to put in what people buy (even if it is just because it looks nice!)
- get more stand-space
- take with me a little table so I don't have to put junk on the stand, it looks very messy (and makes the stand even more crowded)
- the stand/display needs to be more clear, things need to be seen better
- make a few big signs, for example with my website and that all things are handmade
- always bring the boyfriend with me, he knows how to talk.
etc

Not crafting only lasted one evening, the next day I just had to make something :P Oh well, at least I've got loads of goodies for selling now! I still have a lot to do, but I thought I'd give a little update. I'll be posting more hopefully, next week. I'll have more time then because I don't have a market to think about after Friday ;)

I had a great day in Haarzuilens, at the Elf Fantasy Fair!
I'm posting just to show you my final outfit, this is how I looked at the EFF (pictures are taken over there, too!) I was aiming for an Emilie Autumn Plague Rat look :)

In the end it still looks different from what I had in mind (duh!). I think I'll edit the bustle skirt later on, since it looks a bit weird from behind imo....

I know these, technically seen, aren't very good pictures at all. But there's something about nightly road, driving through the night, seeing all those lights and spots and things. Anyway, these pictures are unedited (except for the obvious watermarks of course) and one of them is on it's side. Why? Because I like the way these pictures 'feel', just as they are. And turning one of them on it's side only gives it more of a sense of abstraction. I'm hoping to use these pictures as an inspiration for future paintings and perhaps drawings. If I ever get to that, that is.

A little break on crafting

No crafting at all for me tonight! And hopefully I will be able to pull that off at least tomorrow as well. Not yet an hour ago being surrounded by such a big crafting mess and supplies, unfinished things and finished things waiting to be properly put in bags and price tagged and whatever drove me insane. So I decided I would put it all away, out of my room for a little while. Maybe now I'll be able to update more regularly ;) (And do some more things just for myself like reading and drawing, which are things I have neglected very badly the last.. year!)

Anyway, today the boyfriend and I went to a fair in my town, I bought a few lovely mouse hairclips (blue and pink) and after that, when we got home (my place) again we cleared the dinner table and experimented with filling a stand. A friend and I hired a stand on the 'Oranje markt' (orange market) at Queen's Day (30th of April) to sell stuff we made ourselves (as I told before). Although for her this is more for fun and maybe a little bit of money, for me this kinda is serious business. It will be the first time I actually get to find out if people would buy my stuff (except for my mum, grandmother, aunt and mother in law :P) and if they are willing to pay what I ask for it (though I must admit I lowered the prices VERY much for the market). After the market I'll hopefully be able to finally open a webshop :) I'm very excited! It gives me something to work for, something to do. Though it means a lot of stress as well.
But! Where was I? Ah, Kevin and I spent the whole afternoon experimenting with how I would put things on my stand. In the end 2 meters suddenly is very little space :S I thought I would have so much space left and the opposite is true! Having only two meters of space for my merchandise means I don't have any space for my left-overs (old jewellery I wanted to sell to make room for new things), cards, felt plushies and whatever I still wanted to make but had not yet started on. So, I guess this IS somehow good, namely that I've got less things to make so less to worry about. On the other hand I was pretty excited to make those things because this would be the perfect opportunity to see if people would buy them. Oh well, maybe I'll still make some little things.

Ah! This blog entry has become much longer than I anticipated! :P

So, what AM I going to do if not crafting?
I would like to..
- update my blog more often
- catch up on things I still need to blog about
- change the information on my blog, I need a new introduction fast!
- start on a nice lay-out for my website (I'll need loads of help from Kevin though since I've never made a website lay-out before)
- update and add information on my website
- Start accumulating pictures for my online portfolio!

Crafting, Thoughts and Pictures.

Another day spent by mostly crafting jewellery and watching some episodes of Waking The Dead and Star Trek - The Next Generation. It's silly how fast a day goes by, and how easily I feel like I don't do very much even though I didn't sit still all day. Again I made a bunch of necklaces and bracelets, and I just can't get a satisfying feeling, I need to make more, more, more and more! Maybe I need a little break from crafting and do some other things like updating my blog or toying around with a lay-out for my website, or with the information, texts and even pictures I want to put on my website. If I'm going to try to sell my jewellery at Queen's Day and thereby try to promote my own work and hope to win some visitors (and customers!) on my website, I need to show something on there! Or else it won't do much good urging people to visit my website, will it? ;)

As I said, I've been crafting today... I love these pearly beads I got last week! I've got a few varieties in colour, and I might decide on buying more. I've still got quite a few of them left though, so I'll see if I can find another nice technique of working with wire :)

Here's a picture of my working space, and one of my bed. I put all the jewellery I've already finished on it. I still have a lot of things to finish though, and there's even more I still want to start making!
I don't think it'll ever be enough :P

Glueing...

Usually I hate it when I have to glue things together, but sometimes it isn't that bad at all. Especially not since I found out about this brand of glue! It's called E6000 and it works perfectly! Much better than the glue I was using. I've practically used up all the adjustable rings I had (I have more than shown on the picture) and the earstuds are going fast as well.

I'm certainly keeping some rings for myself! I'll just have to make more to make up for me stealing some of my own merchandise :P

I took some more Spring shots!

I realise my photography has been kind of boring, consisting (lately) of almost only pictures of plants.. I guess I like them, but they're all quite the same. It's just easy to take those photographs, and it takes a lot of me to go and do something else (like photographing people) which I WILL one day do, but for now, I'm just not sure because of various reasons. We'll see. :)

I wanted to add that I really like the second photograph, I love the colours very much but I really do like the composition as well, it's been thought about and I'm think that really shows. It makes me happy.

I love trees, branches, silhouettes... And I thought this was quite a good combination! I know there are quite a few photographs in this set and they all look quite the same, but they're all different at the same time, so I couldn't choose. I'm really hoping to use this as a further inspiration for future drawings and paintings.
